Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is a hands-on treatment by clinicians to treat muscle aches, joint pain, and limited range of motion. It encompasses a variety of techniques that address both soft tissue and the joint surface. Manual therapy has been proven to be an important part of an overall conservative treatment plan for various conditions. Soft tissue can be addressed in many different ways. The following is a list of treatments we provide to address soft tissue problems:

  • Soft Tissue Mobilization is typically the repetitive stripping or kneading of muscle and fascia tissues to facilitate healing.
  • Cupping involves suction using either a soft or hard cup to manipulate the affected soft tissues. This lifting can address muscle, scar tissue and nervous tissue that cause symptoms.
  • Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM) uses either plastic or metal tools with a specially designed edge to brush/stroke the affected area. This is meant to improve the tissue quality of the area by encouraging remodeling and reducing myofascial tension.
  • Mobilization is a slower, more controlled process of articular and soft-tissue stretching intended to improve joint mobility.
  • Manipulation is the application of a rapid force into a joint(s). Manipulation is often associated with an audible popping sound called cavitation.

  • Static Cupping
  • Dynamic Cupping

Manual therapy also involves working at the joint surface to reduce pain or stiffness. The two main methods of addressing this are joint mobilization and manipulation. It is typically part of a complete treatment plan customized for your specific needs. For a demonstration of the above techniques, please view the videos below.
